Cheney Claims Not Voting for Harris Equals Abandoning Constitution

(LibertySociety.com) – Former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) made headlines over the weekend when she endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for the 2024 presidential election, claiming that voters would be “abandoning the Constitution” if they chose not to support her over Republican nominee Donald Trump. Speaking on ABC’s This Week with Jonathan Karl, Cheney stressed that her decision was about protecting democracy, not endorsing Harris’s political platform.

Cheney’s endorsement comes despite her previous sharp criticisms of Harris. During the 2020 election, Cheney warned that Harris was a “radical liberal” who would raise taxes, confiscate guns, and expand government power. She also accused Harris of wanting to recreate the chaos seen in cities like Portland and Seattle, where protests and unrest occurred. However, Cheney’s position has evolved, viewing the 2024 election as a matter of preserving constitutional integrity rather than following party lines.

“This is not about partisan politics,” Cheney said during the interview. She called on conservatives to recognize the importance of upholding the Constitution over supporting Trump. “Those of us who are conservative, those of us who believe in fidelity to the Constitution have a responsibility and have a duty to recognize that,” Cheney explained. While she acknowledged the need to rebuild a conservative movement after this election cycle, she insisted that the priority in 2024 is to defend democratic principles.

Cheney also criticized Republicans who continue to support Trump, stating that a vote for Trump or writing in another candidate would mean “abandoning the Constitution” and making the same mistake many elected Republicans have made by treating the election as simply a partisan choice.

Cheney’s remarks highlight the deep divisions within the Republican Party, where some members like Cheney remain staunchly opposed to Trump’s influence. Once a leading figure in the party, Cheney has become a vocal critic of Trump after the January 6 Capitol riot and lost her House seat in 2022 for speaking out against him.

Her endorsement of Harris is not about supporting Harris’s policies, but about standing against what Cheney views as a greater threat to the nation’s democratic foundations. For Cheney, the 2024 election is about safeguarding the Constitution above all else.
