(LibertySociety.com) – North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum recently said that Americans were “living under a dictatorship” during an interview with one mainstream news outlet. Burgum, who is on the short list of candidates for Trump’s vice president, was asked to respond to claims that the country would collapse if Trump won in November. The host also said that some media outlets and their guests have argued that the 45th president would seek retribution against his enemies by imprisoning them or sending them to concentration camps.
Burgum scoffed at the question, telling the host, “I think you know that this is just ridiculous.” He continued, emphasizing that the Democrats’ strategy is to project fear to the public. Burgum listed how the Biden administration operates as a dictatorship, including his flouting of the law regarding immigration, the southern border, and forgiving student loan debt. He told the host that those types of presidential actions were akin to authoritarianism and dictatorships. He explained that the reason why the Democrats were projecting was because Trump was leading in most recent polls and that Americans were more supportive of the former president’s policies.
Days later, Burgum appeared on another media outlet where he defended his comments about Biden. The host pointed out that Trump signed more executive orders in the same period than Biden had, but Burgum refused to concede. He argued that Biden uses executive orders to push his ideologies onto Americans without approval from the legislative and executive branches. He quipped that the media continuously applies a double standard when expressing fears of Trump governing by executive order.
Trump has promised to gut certain federal departments, as he believes some have made things worse for the American people. He recently said that individual states should be given back control over education, environmental issues, and other areas where the federal government has overstepped. Burgum is seen as a favorite for VP, with Marco Rubio next in line. Trump is expected to announce his vice-presidential pick during the Republican National Convention in July.
