Botched Afghanistan Withdrawal Claims Another American Life
(LibertySociety.com) – Dakota Halverson, the 28-year-old brother of US fallen Marine Lance Corporal Kareen Nikoui, who died in Afghanistan, took his own life nearly a year to the day after his sibling’s death. Evidently, the grief-stricken brother was having a hard time accepting his loss. Their mother, Shana Chappell, said Halverson would frequently sneak away to the cemetery in the middle of the night and sleep there.
The suicide took place across the street from a “permanent memorial” for Nikoui — one of the 13 US troops killed in the chaotic withdrawal on President Joe Biden’s orders in August 2021.

After Nikoui died in Kabul, his parents criticized Biden’s actions when his body arrived from overseas. They said the president was disrespectful and they called for his impeachment.
Tragically, Chappell now has to bury her second child in under a year. She recently set up a GoFundMe page to help with expenses, which raised more than double the goal amount as of August 16. She noted her child wanted his final resting place to be next to his brother.
As with many suicides, there were no further details regarding Halverson’s motive to take his own life. However, the location of his demise may indicate a clue the casualties from Afghanistan are still mounting.
