Brittney Griner Released - Biden Brags on Social Media

( – On December 8, Russian authorities released WNBA star Brittney Griner from prison and put her on a plane to the United States. President Joe Biden wasted no time boasting about the news on Twitter. But the athlete didn’t gain her freedom because Russia had a change of heart. She was part of an exchange deal between Washington, DC, and Moscow — the US brought Griner home by freeing Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout from prison.

In 2011, the court convicted the former Soviet officer of conspiring to give “support or resources” in the form of money and weapons to terrorists so they could kill Americans. In 2011, Attorney General Eric Holder said Bout was “ Nicknamed the “Merchant of Death, he considered him among the “most prolific arms dealers” worldwide.

Although Biden’s move ensured an American was safely brought home, the exchange was not without criticism from many. Senator Bob Menendez (D-NJ) called the release of Bout a “deeply disturbing decision,” because he feels the trade was not equal. Representative Adam Kinzinger (R-IL) was also upset about the deal. The Illinois lawmaker said it was weak of Biden to leave Paul Whelan behind — a former US Marine Reservist serving time in Russia on suspicion of being a spy, despite Russia’s refusal to include him.

Given the seriousness of Bout’s crimes, what do you think of his release? Do you feel the exchange was fair?
