Blinken Condemns Russian Conviction of Navalny

(LibertySociety.com) – Secretary of State Antony Blinken was met with a barrage of comments from Twitter users after he took to the platform to demand that Russian opposition leader Aleksey Navalny be released from prison. He condemned a Russian court for sentencing Navalny to 19 years in prison for extremism, which in reality was nothing more than challenging the Russian government. Blinken stated that the charges against Navalny were politically motivated, adding that “The Kremlin cannot silence the truth.” The irony was not lost on Twitter users who immediately slammed Blinken and the Biden administration for what they believe to be a political prosecution of former President Trump.

Donald Trump Jr. shared Blinken’s post, sarcastically pondering where Russia learned that imprisoning a political opponent was an acceptable thing to do. Senator Eric Schmitt, R-Mo., pointed out the hypocrisy from Blinken in demanding that another country stop doing the same thing the Biden administration is currently doing to its own politicians. Senator Mike Lee, R-Utah, agreed with Senator Blinken in his condemnation of the Russian government, dryly insinuating that the Biden administration should be condemned as well.

Former Trump administration official Richard Grenell blasted Blinken for claiming that Hunter Biden’s laptop was part of a Russian disinformation campaign. He added that Blinken has no right to lecture other countries about their political decisions. Presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy shared Blinken’s post, pointing out his failure to recognize the Biden administration’s own tactics against Trump. Blinken’s statement was released the day after Special Counsel Jack Smith indicted Trump for allegedly attempting to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election.

Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., also shared Blinken’s post, expressing her disbelief that he had the gall to criticize another country for doing the exact thing they are doing to former President Trump. She called for the Biden administration to halt his prosecution as well, as she and many others believe that Smith is violating Trump’s First Amendment rights.
