Black Voters Blame Mayor for Community’s Decline Over Migrants

(LibertySociety.com) – Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson faced a heated confrontation from an 80-year-old Black resident during a recent town hall meeting, where she condemned his pro-migrant policies for wreaking havoc on the city’s Black communities. The elderly woman, who said she grew up in the Jim Crow South, passionately criticized Johnson, accusing him of implementing policies that are destroying the fabric of historically Black neighborhoods.

“All I can say to you is that you are a disgrace,” she began, describing how Johnson’s policies reminded her of segregation in the South. She contrasted her childhood experiences of racial segregation with today’s challenges, emphasizing that while she faced discrimination back then, she never had to worry about her community being overrun or torn apart. “But you know what I didn’t have to worry about? Going back to my community and it would be destroyed. And everybody else is in my community, but Black people. And this is what you’ve done with this immigration.”

The woman pointed to Johnson’s handling of the migrant crisis, arguing that the influx of migrants has brought violence, prostitution, and gangs into Black neighborhoods. “You have allowed all these people. You’ve brought all these people into this city. You are destroying this city,” she said. “And the Black community is flooded with all these immigrants, violent ones, prostitution, gangs. You did that! You are doing this to your people. You are an absolute disgrace to me.”

She described how the current state of Chicago differs starkly from the tight-knit community she once knew. “Like I said, I drank out of that colored water fountain, but I could go back to that Black community that was intact,” she lamented. She criticized rising taxes and the struggles that Black families now face, blaming Johnson for the decline in quality of life. “You’re destroying the Black Southside of Chicago with your policies. All under the Democratic Party.”

This incident is part of a growing wave of dissatisfaction among Black residents in Chicago, who feel abandoned by their elected officials. Mayor Johnson, along with other local Democratic leaders, has faced mounting criticism for his handling of the migrant situation, which many residents argue has disproportionately affected Black neighborhoods. During a recent town hall hosted by Congressman Jonathan Jackson, Black residents expressed similar frustrations, accusing Democrats of replacing Black communities with migrant populations.

The dissatisfaction has spurred grassroots activism among Black Chicagoans, with many now opposing their own party leaders and pledging to “vote red” to oust Black Democrats from office. This shift is already having political repercussions, as support for the Democratic Party among Black voters appears to be waning. While Barack Obama enjoyed 95 percent support from Black voters during his presidential campaigns, recent polls show Vice President Kamala Harris has seen her support drop to just 63 percent among the same demographic.

As the conflict between Black voters and their elected officials intensifies, it is clear that the issues surrounding immigration and local governance are reshaping the political landscape in Chicago and potentially beyond.
