Billionaire NBA Owner Says Chinese Uyghur Genocide Is Not Important

(LibertySociety.com) – On January 15, NBA Golden State Warriors minority owner Chamath Palihapitiya spoke on a podcast, stating he didn’t care about the human rights violations against the Uyghurs in China. In fact, he said “nobody cares,” and the US government should “take care of its own” before helping anyone outside its borders.

The Uyghurs are a group of people, the majority of them Muslim, who live in Xinjiang, China. The United States, along with many other countries, have accused the communist nation of committing crimes against the group through genocide, separating families, and sterilizing the women against their will.

According to Palihapitiya, the alleged atrocities suffered by the Uyghur people is below the line of things he cares about.

The NBA team owner backtracked his comments on Twitter following a backlash from the public over his insensitive comments about the treatment of an entire society of people.

He said human rights matter everywhere and tried to relate his own past as a refugee escaping similar conditions. However, Palihapitiya’s recent comment may be too late, as the Warriors tried to distance themselves from his podcast revelation. Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) said the remarks were “shameful.”
