(LibertySociety.com) – In a recent discussion on the Possible podcast with billionaire Reid Hoffman, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates floated the idea that humanity may need a new “religion” or guiding philosophy to address the challenges of the AI era. Gates expressed both optimism and caution about AI’s potential, noting that while the technology could be revolutionary in solving major issues—like disease, hunger, and climate change—it also poses risks, especially if people become overly dependent on it.
Gates suggested that a fresh moral or spiritual framework could help society navigate the rapidly evolving AI landscape. “You know, you can almost call it a new religion or a new philosophy of, okay, how do we stay connected with each other, not addicted to these things,” he explained. Gates pointed out that while AI could help address significant problems, there’s also the temptation for people to lose touch with reality by spending too much time in virtual spaces.
In contrast, tech critics like Elon Musk have recently voiced concerns about how influential tech leaders are positioning themselves on AI and political matters. According to Breitbart News, Musk recently claimed that Gates and Hoffman, among others, are apprehensive about the possibility of former President Donald Trump winning the 2024 election, hinting at their potential concerns about issues like transparency regarding high-profile controversies, such as the Epstein client list.
Gates’s remarks reflect a broader conversation in tech circles around how to responsibly harness AI’s power without compromising human connections and ethics. As AI technology continues to advance, the question of whether society needs a renewed ethical or philosophical approach to its use remains open, with Gates suggesting that AI’s impact on human life may demand more than just regulatory measures.
