Bidens to Skip White House Trick-or-Treating in 2021

(LibertySociety.com) – Ever since First Lady Mamie Eisenhower brought the Halloween spirit to the White House in 1958, and the Kennedys hosted a trick-or-treating event in the early 60s, each president has had their own way of celebrating October 31. However, this year’s scary and sweet activities will have to go on without the Bidens. Unfortunately, the First Couple won’t be home to dress up in costume or hand out goodies to spooky visitors. President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden will instead attend the Group of 20 Summit in Italy, breaking a long-time tradition.

Even though this year’s European gathering falls on the holiday weekend, that doesn’t mean the Biden administration won’t participate at all. White House staff will light the presidential residence with orange light, and White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki hinted that staff might dress up for the night’s festivities.

She went on to say Halloween plans at 1400 Pennsylvania Avenue are up to the East Wing, but any celebration will include “steps and precautions” for COVID. It’s hard to say if the Bidens would have participated in the Halloween events if they were in town, given the state of the pandemic. The US will have to wait until next year to find out how they’ll celebrate the day with their fellow Americans.
