Biden Signs Executive Order That Deters Against Wrongful Detention of US Nationals

Another Executive Order INCOMING — It May Benefit American Hostages

( – On July 19, President Joe Biden signed an executive order to help his administration free American hostages and those wrongfully detained overseas. The measure, referred to as Bolstering Efforts to Bring Hostages and Wrongfully Detained United States Nationals Home, will provide federal officials additional scrutiny, such as visa bans and sanctions, to apply pressure on foreign governments and deter them from remanding US nationals.

Biden has been under immense pressure to secure the release of WNBA player Brittney Griner, who is currently in a Russian prison on drug charges. She recently wrote the president a letter saying she was “terrified” of being stuck in the country forever. The US leader told the basketball star’s wife he’s trying to get her released “as soon as possible.”

It’s not out of the realm of possibility. Biden already secured a trade with Russia to bring an incarcerated former Marine home to the states in exchange for a pilot detained in the US for drug smuggling in April.

The order also called for the State Department to incorporate a new warning system for travelers. It earmarks certain countries with a letter to indicate the risk factor for Americans who want to travel to other lands. For example, a K designator will warn citizens that a particular region has a high instance of kidnappings, whereas D would mean there’s an increased chance of detention in the area.

Do you think the executive order will deter foreign nations from kidnapping or otherwise wrongfully keeping Americans against their will?
