(LibertySociety.com) – President Biden made a rare surprise appearance at the White House press briefing on Friday, where he addressed the positive September jobs report and hinted at needing additional funds from Congress for Hurricane Helene disaster relief. Biden’s unexpected arrival at the podium prompted audible reactions from reporters, marking the first time he has appeared in a White House briefing since taking office in 2021.
During his remarks, Biden spoke about the economic gains, noting the country’s resilience, and touched on the averted port workers’ strike. However, his focus shifted to the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, which has devastated several southeastern states. With recovery efforts ongoing, the president suggested that more federal funding might be necessary to address the disaster’s extensive damage.
“We’re going to have to deal with unforeseen costs,” Biden said. “I’m probably going to have to ask the Congress before we leave for more money to deal with some of those problems.”
Hurricane Helene has caused immense destruction, particularly in western North Carolina, where the death toll has surpassed 100, contributing to more than 215 deaths overall. Biden’s response has been criticized by former President Trump and other political opponents, who argue the administration’s efforts have been insufficient. The White House, however, has strongly defended its handling of the crisis.
According to the administration, Biden has taken decisive action, approving emergency declarations and deploying 1,000 active-duty soldiers for search-and-rescue operations. More than 4,800 FEMA and federal personnel have been deployed across affected states, with supplies including 8.5 million meals, 7 million liters of water, 150 generators, and 220,000 tarps being distributed. In addition, over $45 million in assistance has already been provided to survivors, including one-time $750 payments from FEMA to eligible applicants across the region.
Biden’s sudden press briefing comes on the heels of an Axios report highlighting his limited public appearances. Critics, particularly Republicans, have raised concerns about Biden’s ability to manage the demands of the presidency at 81, pointing out that many of his public events are scheduled in the late morning and early afternoon. Since July 21, the president has only given two interviews and participated in one campaign event with Vice President Kamala Harris, who is now the Democratic nominee for 2024.
The White House downplayed these concerns, with spokesperson Andrew Bates explaining that public appearances are timed strategically to maximize reach, especially before evening news broadcasts. He emphasized that Biden works continuously behind the scenes, despite fewer public engagements .
