(LibertySociety.com) – President Joe Biden’s administration has welcomed over 9 million migrants into the United States, with about 6.5 million entering illegally or through quasi-legal means, according to a report by the Wall Street Journal. This surge, by early 2024, is nearly triple the number of migrants that came in the previous decade, excluding those turned away at the border.
The influx of migrants allows Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris to point to economic growth, as companies are creating jobs for low-wage migrants rather than better-paying positions for American workers. The Journal even suggested the real number of migrants might be higher, with the House of Representatives’ Homeland Security Committee estimating that at least 2 million migrants have crossed the border undetected since late 2020.
Biden’s administration continues to allow more than 170,000 southern migrants into the U.S. each month and is increasing the number of white-collar visa workers. This flood of new arrivals is straining wages, productivity, and the economic prospects of ordinary Americans. For instance, 23 percent of Biden’s migrants lack a high school diploma, compared to just 10 percent of U.S. adults.
Yet, some migrants are also highly educated, with 36 percent claiming to have college degrees from foreign universities, slightly higher than the 35 percent of Americans with four-year degrees. Still, this doesn’t always translate to better jobs for U.S. graduates. For example, 2.5 percent of Biden’s migrants work as software developers, double the 1 percent of Americans in the same field.
The result? U.S. college graduates are struggling. Hiring in sectors like finance, insurance, and real estate has dropped, with the class of 2023 facing especially tough prospects. Many new graduates are spending months searching for jobs, while foreign workers drive wages down.
In the construction sector, 6.5 percent of Biden’s migrants now work, compared to just 1 percent of Americans. However, productivity in the industry has fallen sharply, dragging down wages and wealth for American workers. This is part of a broader trend, where mass immigration benefits wealthy investors while squeezing blue-collar and white-collar Americans alike.
