Beverly Hills Cop’ Star John Ashton Passes Away at 76

(LibertySociety.com) – Actor John Ashton, best known for his role as Detective Sergeant John Taggart in the hit film Beverly Hills Cop, has passed away at the age of 76. Ashton’s death was confirmed by his manager, Alan Somers, who shared that Ashton died at home in Ft. Collins, Colorado, surrounded by his wife, Robin Hoye, and family.

“John was a loving husband, brother, father, and grandfather who will be deeply missed by all who knew him,” Somers said in a statement. “His memory will forever be treasured by his family and loved ones.”

Ashton gained fame for playing the straight-laced counterpart to Eddie Murphy’s wise-cracking Axel Foley in Beverly Hills Cop. His portrayal of the long-suffering detective became a fan favorite, and he reprised the role in the film’s sequels, most recently returning in Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, which was released on Netflix this July.

Born on February 22, 1948, in Springfield, Massachusetts, Ashton grew up in Connecticut before moving to California to pursue acting. His career began in the 1970s with smaller roles in TV shows like Emergency!, Kojak, MASH, and Columbo. He later found success in film, with roles in Midnight Run, Some Kind of Wonderful, and Gone Baby Gone.

Beyond acting, Ashton was a passionate fan of the New York Yankees and Giants and enjoyed golfing and reading. His love for the craft of acting shone through in every role he played, earning him respect and admiration in the entertainment industry.

Ashton leaves behind his wife, two children, three step-children, and a grandson. His passing marks the loss of a talented actor who brought joy to audiences over decades and leaves behind a legacy that will be remembered fondly by fans and loved ones alike.
