(LibertySociety.com) – Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) addressed questions about Vice President Kamala Harris and her evolving political positions during an interview on NBC’s Meet the Press on Sunday. Host Kristen Welker pressed Sanders on whether Harris, whom he has previously described as a progressive, had moved away from her earlier positions. Specifically, Welker noted that Harris had once supported key progressive policies such as Medicare for All and a ban on fracking, but has since changed her stance. She asked Sanders directly if he believed Harris was abandoning her progressive ideals.
Sanders pushed back on that characterization, explaining that he didn’t think Harris had abandoned her beliefs but was rather adapting to the political realities of winning a national election. “No, I don’t think she’s abandoning her ideals,” Sanders responded. “I think she’s trying to be pragmatic and doing what she thinks is right in order to win the election.”
The Vermont senator acknowledged that while his own views might be slightly different, Harris’s shift in positions didn’t necessarily mean she was turning her back on progressive values. Sanders has long been an advocate for Medicare for All, a policy he has championed throughout his political career. He reiterated his belief that the United States, unlike other major nations, fails to guarantee health care to all of its people, despite spending significantly more per capita. “That is why I support Medicare for All,” Sanders said, underscoring his commitment to the issue.
Welker then asked Sanders if he still considers Harris to be a progressive, given her changes on key policy issues. Sanders affirmed that he does, stating, “I do.” His response suggested that he believes Harris still aligns with many of the core values of progressivism, even if her policy positions have shifted in the context of a broader electoral strategy.
Sanders’s comments reflect the ongoing tension within the Democratic Party between its progressive wing and more moderate elements. Politicians like Harris, who once embraced more left-leaning positions, may feel the need to moderate their stances to appeal to a wider electorate, particularly in the face of a challenging national election. Sanders’s defense of Harris suggests an understanding of the pragmatism often required in politics while still holding onto core principles.
