(LibertySociety.com) – Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey has launched an investigation into Google, alleging the tech giant suppresses conservative viewpoints in its search results, potentially influencing the presidential election. Bailey claims Google manipulates its algorithm to push conservative content further back in search results, making it less accessible to users. According to a statement from Bailey’s office, evidence suggests that Google prioritizes liberal content while de-emphasizing conservative sources by positioning them on later pages of search results, impacting access to information about Donald Trump’s campaign before Election Day.
Bailey plans to issue subpoenas to Google to review its algorithms and other internal processes that might contribute to this alleged bias, aiming to verify whether Google is “censoring conservative speech.” A spokesperson from Bailey’s office stated that as the nation’s largest search engine, Google has a responsibility to operate fairly without discriminating against specific political views.
In response, Google has denied these allegations, insisting its search results are nonpartisan and tailored to provide the most relevant information to users. They highlighted that independent studies have found Google’s search algorithms to be unbiased, asserting that their business is built on providing useful, reliable information for all users, regardless of political beliefs.
These accusations mirror similar claims from high-profile Republicans, including Donald Trump and Senator Roger Marshall. Trump recently indicated that if re-elected, he would direct the Department of Justice to investigate and possibly prosecute Google for alleged election interference. Marshall echoed similar concerns, particularly regarding Google’s autocomplete function, which reportedly omitted Trump in searches related to famous assassination attempts while including other public figures.
This investigation is part of a broader series of scrutiny against tech giants accused of suppressing conservative content, a recurring concern among GOP lawmakers and conservative groups.
