(LibertySociety.com) – Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York announced her official position on keeping President Joe Biden on the Democratic ticket for the election in November, stating firmly that she will continue to support the president’s campaign.
Ocasio-Cortez posted a statement on the matter on Tuesday, July 9, and said the issue of Biden remaining the nominee is “closed.”
The congresswoman said she spoke with Biden over the weekend “extensively,” and that he made it “clear” to her that he would remain in the race. She said he has reiterated this in public and remains consistent on that decision, concluding that he is the party’s nominee and therefore “not leaving this race.”
Following his abysmal performance during the first presidential debate against former President Donald Trump on June 27, CNN commentators immediately threw the president under the bus, suggesting he was not fit to be the Democratic nominee. The sudden turn resulted in widespread panic within the party. Despite this, Biden announced the following day that he would not step down and remain firm in that position, which Ocasio-Cortez’s testimony further confirms.
In an attempt to do damage control, Biden did his first long-form interview on the campaign trail, but host George Stephanopoulos did not take it easy on the president and pressed him on the growing concerns about his mental acuity and physical endurance. Biden seemed more fit in that discussion than on the debate stage and said his performance was simply a “bad night” for him.
On Monday, July 8, the president said that only “elites” were calling for him to drop out, perhaps referencing the recent op-ed published by actor George Clooney. Clooney said that while Biden was his friend and he still loved the president, the party needed “a new nominee.”
Biden made it clear “that he is in this race,” Ocasio-Cortez said, concluding her announcement by saying she supports the president and calling for party unity behind him.
