(LibertySociety.com) – Far-left radical New York Democrat Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC) is no stranger to pushing false narratives and clutching her pearls when someone says something she disagrees with, but most American citizens would expect her to be knowledgeable of the United States Constitution and the separation of powers between the three branches of the federal government. However, AOC removed all doubt about her understanding of one of the most important founding documents in the nation’s history during a CNN interview on July 2.
During her interview with Dana Bash, AOC claimed if Congress did not exercise power over the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS), “then we will start to see an undemocratic and frankly dangerous authoritarian expansion of power.” She also claimed that SCOTUS is already engaging in that type of behavior. Cortez said decisions made by the Court were legitimate examples of overreach, although its decisions are based on each justice’s interpretation of the Constitution. Lawmakers have no authority over the judicial branch whether or not they disagree they disagree with a ruling.
Bash asked AOC what types of actions she believed Congress could take to remedy her complaints, which seemed to fluster the New York lawmaker. She quickly shifted to criticizing certain justices for what she believed to be unethical behavior, such as reports that they had received gifts from Republican donors, insinuating that they ruled a certain way because of those gifts rather than their explanations of their interpretation of the Constitution.
AOC said that Congress should consider sending subpoenas to the justices and expanding the Court, adding that impeachment is another option to “rein in” its power. She also claimed that Justice Thomas broke the law when he refused to recuse himself from a case about the events surrounding the riot at the Capitol on January 6th, 2021, as she believes that his wife’s support of then-President Trump influenced his decision-making. Twitter users responded to AOC’s claims by offering her educational comments about the co-equal branches of government.
