(LibertySociety.com) – Controversial Democratic Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York is one step closer to holding onto her seat in the US House of Representatives after defeating her Democratic primary challenger Marty Dolan, a former investment banker who ran on a more moderate platform.
Just a few minutes after the polls closed on Tuesday, June 25, at 9 PM, the press called the election for Ocasio-Cortez, who will be the Democratic nominee once again for New York’s 14th Congressional District, which covers parts of Queens and the Bronx in New York City.
The congresswoman’s opponent, a 66-year-old former investment banker, described himself on the campaign trail as a true “progressive” Democrat while describing the 34-year-old Ocasio-Cortez as “radical” and vowing to correct issues that have spiraled out of control because of the policies pushed by the congresswoman, such as the immigration crisis.
Dolan told reporters that he believes people have “had enough of radicalism” and are “completely fed up with it.” He accused Ocasio-Cortez of being “absent on community” and “not around” in her district. He also said she was “absent on crime,” which has remained high in New York City over the last four years. Dolan accused the congresswoman of instead going off to do things to make herself more “famous.”
Ocasio-Cortez, one of the youngest members in the House, became notorious for her progressive political positions, launching her career in 2016 while campaigning for Sen. Bernie Sanders before running for Congress and winning in 2018 after defeating Joe Crowley in the Democratic primary. She went on to co-found the informal left-wing group in the House called “The Squad,” which consists of nine progressive Democrats.
Many of Ocasio-Cortez’s supporters are younger and many align with the radical leftwing Democratic Socialist faction, which Dolan attempted to sway voters away from and toward more moderate stances on various issues.
Right before the June 25 primary, Ocasio-Cortez took the stage at a New York rally alongside fellow Squad member Rep. Jamaal Bowman, who did not win his primary election. The 48-year-old progressive Democrat lost to 70-year-old George Latimer, a Westchester County Executive, in a race that was largely decided by their opposing positions on the war between Israel and Hamas.
