(LibertySociety.com) – Efforts to remove former President Trump as a primary election contender are coming from many directions, with the latest from two activist groups that believe that secretaries of state can disallow his name from appearing on the ballot. The groups believe that they can use the 14th amendment to bar him from running due to his participation in what they believe was an insurrection at the Capitol building on January 6th, 2021. Although Attorney General Merrick Garland was careful to avoid using the word insurrection in his description of the events that day, instead calling it an attack, many Democrats and media personalities still refer to the incident as an insurrection.
The activists have begun their quest in four states, one being the battleground state of Georgia. They believe that they can convince Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger to pull him off the ballot. Raffensperger recently testified to a federal grand jury for Special Counsel Jack Smith’s investigation into the former President, as he is also investigating former President Trump’s questioning of the 2020 presidential election. The groups are also hoping to get him pulled from the Nevada ticket, which is also an important primary state. The groups will be holding rallies to attempt to sway the officials, posting up outside of their offices for a week-long event.
The activists are calling their multi-state blitz the “Trump is Disqualified” campaign, although the 14th Amendment does not mention the office of the president and he has not been charged or convicted of insurrection. A campaign manager for one of the groups, Free Speech For People, believes that the 45th President was responsible for the violence that occurred on that day, and that “failing to hold him responsible” is a violation of the Constitution. While the efforts by these groups may ultimately fail, many other forces are pushing for the same outcome. Special Counsel Smith is rumored to have another horde of charges brought against the former president, but charges alone are not disqualifying.
