(LibertySociety.com) – Stacey Abrams recently raised concerns about the low support from Black men for Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign, suggesting that lingering issues of sexism and racism are affecting the response from this demographic. Her comments came after a Georgia pastor remarked that “misogyny” within the Black community might be impacting electoral outcomes for women, a factor Abrams suggests influenced her own gubernatorial campaigns.
Abrams pointed out that while Harris does have some support among Black men, the influence of sexism remains significant. This assessment aligns with polling data indicating Harris may be underperforming with Black voters relative to past Democratic candidates, while former President Donald Trump has garnered a notable portion of this group’s support—the highest for a Republican since 1960.
The Harris campaign has enlisted former President Barack Obama to address this concern on the campaign trail. Recently, Obama highlighted the importance of Black male voters’ support, suggesting some may be struggling with the concept of a woman as president. He urged this demographic to consider the longstanding role women have played in advocating for equality, often standing by Black men in their own struggles against systemic challenges.
The Harris campaign has taken a broad approach to address this, focusing on outreach efforts that, as Abrams states, “meet voters where they are” to bridge the gap in support.
