(LibertySociety.com) – On Tuesday’s episode of The View, co-host Sunny Hostin, who also serves as ABC News Senior Legal Correspondent, addressed the controversy surrounding Attorney General nominee Matt Gaetz. During a segment on President-elect Donald Trump’s Cabinet appointments, Hostin read a “legal note” clarifying that no charges were brought against Gaetz following a years-long Justice Department investigation.
“Matt Gaetz has long denied all allegations, calling the claims ‘invented,’” Hostin said. “He stated to ABC News that this false smear, following a three-year criminal investigation, should be viewed with great skepticism. The DOJ investigation was closed with no charges being brought.”
The remarks came as Gaetz, a staunch Trump ally and Florida congressman, faced renewed scrutiny following his nomination to lead the Justice Department. Critics have pointed to past allegations of misconduct, which Gaetz has consistently denied, as grounds for opposing his confirmation.
The DOJ investigation, initiated in 2020, focused on allegations of sex trafficking and other misconduct. In February 2023, the department officially closed the case without filing any charges. Gaetz and his legal team have maintained that the investigation was politically motivated and lacked merit.
Gaetz’s nomination by Trump has sparked debate across political and media circles, with supporters praising his commitment to the “America First” agenda and detractors questioning his qualifications.
