3 Gubernatorial Races to Watch in 2022

(LibertySociety.com) – Many Americans have their eyes on the 2022 midterms as it applies to seats in Congress, but those aren’t the only races voters need to watch. This upcoming election cycle is also heating up to be exciting and important for those running for state governor positions.

The gubernatorial races to keep on the radar in 2022 include Georgia, Arizona, and Pennsylvania, which were key battlegrounds during the 2020 general election. Each political party is competing for control, and it should be interesting to see who comes out victorious. Here’s how each state is shaping up for the election season.

Heading Down South

Governor Brian Kemp (R-GA) currently runs the Peach State, but it might not be that way for long. After his perceived lack of support for former President Donald Trump, many have been looking to unseat the state’s leader. Former Senator David Perdue (R-GA) announced on December 5 he would run for governor against Kemp, and has been endorsed by President Trump.

On the Democrat’s side of the ballot, Georgians have political activist and former Georgia House minority leader Stacey Abrams, who threw her hat in the ring on December 1.

In the case Abrams were to win, her election would further cement a Democrat stronghold; something Perdue wants to prevent. Other Republicans looking to run the state include former Georgia Representative Vernon Jones and GOP activist Kandiss Taylor.

Traveling to the Northeast

Pennsylvania, which always has an exciting election cycle, should also have a lively gubernatorial race in 2022. Governor Tom Wolf (D-PA) currently runs the Keystone State, but that might not last much longer. In fact, political experts say the state’s governor race is a “toss-up.”

In October, Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro (D) announced his intention to run for governor, and he’ll likely win the nomination. On the Right, several candidates plan to run to represent the state, and they’re campaigning to win the primary. Most recently, Pennsylvania State Senator Scott Martin (R) stated he wants to win the nomination and the governorship to put “Pennsylvania back on the right path.”

A Trip Out West

Residents of the state of Arizona elected Republican Governor Doug Ducey to lead in 2014, but his second term ends in 2023. Some conservatives hoping to take his place include businessman and law enforcement supporter Steve Gaynor, former TV anchor Kari Lake, and former US Representative Matt Salmon. Democrats looking to take the helm from the Right include Arizona Secretary of State Katie Hobbs, Representative Aaron Lieberman, and former Mayor of Nogales Marco Lopez.

It’s too early to tell who will win the governor’s seat in these states, but one thing is for sure — the races will be interesting to watch.
