(LibertySociety.com) – America’s third-largest city marked its last weekend in January with 14 gunshot victims. Four of the shootings resulted in death, two of which were high school students. The students were leaving Innovations High School in Chicago shortly before 1 p.m. on January 26 when a group of individuals in two vehicles pulled up and began shooting upon exiting the vehicle. The students were walking in a group of around six students when the shooting began. The two victims were transported to Northwestern Hospital where they died shortly after arriving. The school is in The Loop, which is the main section of Downtown Chicago and the second largest commercial business district in the country.
The third fatal shooting of the weekend occurred on January 27 on South Vincennes Avenue on Chicago’s South Side. The victim was a 28-year-old man who was found just before 3 a.m. by police officers with a gunshot wound in his chest. No one was arrested, but a handgun was found lying next to the victim’s body. The fourth fatal shooting occurred in Englewood just after midnight on January 28. Police located the male victim who was inside his pickup truck, which had crashed into a tree. He also had a gunshot wound to the chest. No arrests were made, but police are still investigating.
The other non-fatal shootings occurred in various places around the city. One man was shot in the back while driving down the street in the Chicago Lawn neighborhood. Another was shot in the leg inside of a home after a physical altercation with another man. A 53-year-old man was shot multiple times while standing on the sidewalk in Fernwood. Another man was shot in the leg while inside an apartment building. A 20-year-old man was shot in the hand while driving down the street in the Brighton Park neighborhood. Twenty-three people have been killed in Chicago in 2024.
